Dan Brady

Dan came post-pandemic to Survivors via Global Open Mic, and likes to say, “I love writing; it’s great fun, good for the heart, mind, and health. I’m fascinated by how words fit together, chime, rhyme and flow from one to the next. I write because I cannot be silent; how could one be in this world? I’ve a theory: the right set of words, presented in the right setting is one of the ways civilization evolves. I ever improve my craft and seek such words so, should the opportunity arise, I’ll present that which may transform my life and or the lives of others.”
Easter Meaning
To my way of thinking
Easter offers evidence that we are more
Than we think,
Believe,
Hope,
Or understand –
It was a moment when God
Touched the Earth,
Made a change,
Lent a hand,
And left a clue –
Letting faith have its sway
Allowing grace to flow and heal
Freeing the good
In one and all … to one and all
Let Love be all you are
Easter showed impossibilities
Easter showed them overcome
I affirm that
Even in the absolute worst of moments
We all can find a way
Allow Love, find that Peace,
And give away far more
Than we thought possible!
A Haiku set
Sometimes, when dreaming of the future
I can almost see it
And wish I were blind
Ancestors laughing…
“What’s the joke?” I ask
They stop, look my way, laugh more
Ancestor says,
“Time never stands still.”
Other ancestor says, “Thank god!”
When it comes to
Tomorrows…
Everybody’s a beginner
Just when … are you not
Creating thoughts that then
Become things?
Simple question
If your heart is in the right place
Where else would you rather be?
How far can you go
When everywhere you go
It’s you?
Her newborn
A bloody horror, shattered corpse
Dangling play toys… wind chime
At the stroke of twelve
Singing her Happy Birthday
Couldn’t wait any longer
How many times can you say
Considerations on a glance, a thought, and chance…
How many times can you say.
“I love you.”
Show you care, exhibit, give proof, evidence,
Take action …
In a given day –
How many times? How many ways?
Can you say “I love you.”
To the one, to those, to the many
To everyone
That you care for or about let them know that
They are precious to you.
How many times? How many ways?
How do you show,
Day to day,
Hour to hour,
Minute by minute,
Breath by living and loving breath,
Even
Between heartbeats?
Even when distraught, distressed,
In conflict, confused, or argumentative?
How many times? How many ways?
Do you let them know,
Despite all that…
How they’ve made you over,
Turned under dripping regrets,
Found your heart to be one with theirs and,
When taking one another’s hands
Find forgiveness, supple support,
Loving looks, are lent an ear,
Given a shoulder to cry on,
Offered a Kleenex to blow your nose,
Offered the kind of empathetic solace
That gracefully softens everything around your soul… hmm?
How many times is enough times?
How many times can it be done?
How important is their love to you,
To them,
To anyone?
How many times? How many ways?
Can you say
I love you…
Without
Or between words?
Put a number in your mind
Think about that number
Think about all those times
Then consider this:
How could that ever be enough?
Isn’t there room for one more
Thought, look, smile, touch
Hug?
Isn’t there always room
For at least one more
Time
In all the time that you have
Isn’t there time
For one more try?
… Dan was born in New York City, New York in 1952. When his father died in 1960, his mother decided to return to California. She managed to raise seven children and do well despite trying circumstances. Dan was the first of his family to complete a college education. He graduated from San Francisco State University in 1975 with a degree in Sociology and in 1985 went back to obtain an elementary teacher’s credential.
He began teaching in 1987 and for a while writing was set aside. He married in 1989 and soon the muse moved again as he began a return to writing. Science fiction, being a long time fascination, was where he began. During that time, he also made a return to writing and performing poetry in San Francisco’s open mic scene, notably at Sacred Grounds Café, where his is the current curator.
He’s had poetry published in magazines and presented a number of readings in the Bay Area. Although, at first, his readings consisted mostly of haiku, he experienced a rekindled interest in lyric poetry. Most recently he has published three collections of poetry, the completion of two Science fiction manuscripts for young adults, and several children’s book manuscripts.
